MARCOS ARIEL QUARTETO presenting the best of BOSSA NOVA & BRAZILIAN JAZZ

Pianist, composer and singer MARCOS ARIEL, is widely recognized to be one of the outstanding musicians at the forefront of Brazil`s wave of instrumentalists in the United States. His distinctive musical language is based in ``CARIOCA`` (one who is native from Rio de Janeiro) and is splashed with a passion for the great classical jazz masters.

As a child in Rio de Janeiro, his Father encouraged him to listen to and absorb the compositions of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin. He later developed a strong attachment to jazz, with influences varying from the ingenious sounds of his eclectic countryman Hermeto Pascoal, to the American style of jazz great Chick Corea.

Revealing “a major league compositions talent” (LOS ANGELS TIMES), Marcos Ariel’s unique works are not characterized by ethnic traditions, but by their reference to a broad variety of world influences.

Ever since Brazilian music first left its homeland, its magical sounds and rhythms have captivated the attention of listeners around the world. Marcos Ariel`s cultural roots are undoubtedly Brazilian, but his fascination and flirtation with American Jazz and Smooth Jazz sets him apart from others musicians.

Music honors keep coming Ariel`s way and ever-expanding audience is being dazzled by Marcos Ariel innovate compositional style and keyboard prowess. A pioneer of his time, Marcos Ariel also acts as a producer, having been one of the creators and founder of JAZZMANIA, the most famous Jazz Club in Rio de Janeiro.

Marcos Ariel is seeking now to reach new audiences with his engaging approach, both musically and as a presence onstage, where he easily connects with the audience.

In his most recent release, the album Missing Ipanema, Marcos Ariel featured the super special participation of the great guitarist Marc Antoine.

Bossa Nova is today the best-known Brazilian music genres abroad. Was developed and popularized in the 1950s and 1960s and the phrase bossa nova means literally “new trend” or “new wave”

A lyrical fusion of samba and jazz, bossa nova acquired a large following in the 1960s, becoming well known and very popular in the United States and throughout the world.

After launching two CDs with only songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim,” Piano com Tom Jobim” and “Alone with Jobim”, Marcos Ariel became known as a great interpreter and deep connoisseur of the music of Maestro Jobim, the biggest icon of the genre.

With original and innovative arrangements, the pianist plays, sings and tells stories and curiosities about the show's repertoire in Portuguese and English keeping the audience entertained.

Marcos Ariel's show is also an excellent opportunity for the audience to learn more about the history of Brazilian music.

The show's repertoire was chosen with great care because among so many beautiful compositions c by Maestro Jobim, it is difficult to choose the most significant ones, all played with a lot of energy and jazzy hints.

From the famous Girl from Ipanema, through Waters of Marc, Desafinado, Quiet Nights and One Note Samba, Marcos Ariel presents a totally new way to play Bossa Nova blending the articulations of Be Bop with samba jazz swing.

The show climaxes with Ariel's brilliant interpretation of the classic Waters of March.

Before playing and singing the song, Marcos Ariel explains where and how Antonio Carlos Jobim was inspired to compose the lyrics and the music. At this moment, Ariel takes the opportunity to explain by whistling the song of some Brazilian birds.
